The Doctorate in History, which began with the XXIX Cycle (2013/2014), starting from the XXXIII Cycle (aa 2017/2018) is structured as an innovative international doctorate. This is in recognition of the following characteristics:

(a) the program includes a clear interdisciplinary component, comprised by academic contributions from a series of different disciplinary areas;

(b) 25% of the teaching staff is drawn from foreign universities;

(c) 20% of doctoral scholarships are reserved for students who have gained their qualifications overseas;

(d) all PhD students are required to spend at least 12 months abroad engaged in research and / or curricular training activities;

(e) promotion of and support for Cotutelle agreements (the majority of cases) and Joint Doctorates (wherever possible);

(f) research and training activities which are conducted on the basis of a framework of agreements and cooperation with overseas academics and universities that participate in the network of scientific and academic relationships that have a pivotal role in the doctorate.

The PhD program in History aims at training graduate students with a solid background in historical studies to achieve a high scientific level in the different branches of the historical research. It allows to deepen the knowledge and the analytic skills of the students about the historical processes in different periods, from the pre-classical to the contemporary age, and in a multiple, European and non-European, spatial context.
The research methodologies are based mainly on historical comparative method and are characterized by a high degree of scientific interdisciplinarity.

Characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity, the PhD program in History provides, besides a multidisciplinary approach, the peculiar formative elements of the various disciplinary areas of which it is composed. It particularly covers the following research fields and topics:

- Pre-classical ancient Near-East
- Ancient history and historiography
- History and civilisation of Greek and Latin Middle Age
- Modern and Contemporary History
- Constitutional and Administrative History
- History and Politics of European Integration
- History of Asia and Africa

The present PhD program in History arises from the coupling of two former courses already active at the University of Pavia, whose training experience it carries on: the PhD program in “Institutions, Ideas, Political Movements in Contemporary Europe” – afterwards reorganized as PhD in “History” – and the PhD program in “History and civilisations of the Mediterranean Area in Pre-classical, Classical and Middle Age. Spaces, cultures, interactions”.
